    Crisis Analytics: Big Data Driven Crisis Response

    Disasters have long been a scourge for humanity. With the advances in technology (in terms of computing, communications, and the ability to process and analyze big data), our ability to respond to disasters is at an inflection point. There is great optimism that big data tools can be leveraged to process the large amounts of crisis-related data (in the form of user generated data in addition to the traditional humanitarian data) to provide an insight into the fast-changing situation and help drive an effective disaster response. This article introduces the history and the future of big crisis data analytics, along with a discussion on its promise, challenges, and pitfalls

    Frequency of Abnormal Menstrual Cycles Associated with Raised BMI

    Objective: The main aim of this study was to find the frequency of menstrual cycle abnormalities which were associated with higher BMI.Study Design: It is a cross sectional type of study.Place and Duration of study: This study was carried out in a duration of 9 months from August 2018 to April 2019 in Gynecology and Obstetrics department of Services hospital Lahore.Materials and Methods: A total of 100 cases which were in fertile group i.e. Age greater than 12 years were included in this study. Inclusion criteria was to have menstrual abnormalities for at least last 3 cycles. Exclusion criteria included patients with bleeding tendencies, abnormalities of uterus and hormonal abnormalities. Body mass index of every patient was calculated and the patients who had BMI greater than 25kg/m2 were labeled as high. Informed consent was taken from all the patients or their relatives. A pre-designed proforma was used to collect the data. Ethical committee approval was taken.Results: There were 100 patients selected for the study. Mean age in our study was 20.21±4.57 years. The mean time period for there were menstrual abnormalities was 7.21±2.34 months. 32% of the patients had raised BMI. 64% were taking treatment for this. The patients who had age of menarche greater than 14 years, incidence of increased BMI was much higher seen in 16 (47. 06%) of cases. Patients who had previous treatment for delayed menstruation also had increased BMI which was seen in 23 (40. 35%) cases.Conclusion: There is high association of menstrual abnormalities with Raised BMI and other factors like delayed menarche and prior treatment for it increases the incidence significantly

    Towards Blockchain-enabled Wireless Mesh Networks

    Recently, mesh networking and blockchain are two of the hottest technologies in the telecommunications industry. Combining both can reformulate internet access and make connecting to the Internet not only easy, but affordable too. Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) is a blockchain framework implementation and one of the Hyperledger projects hosted by The Linux Foundation. We evaluate HLF in a real production mesh network and in the laboratory, quantify its performance, bottlenecks and limitations of the current implementation. We identify the opportunities for improvement to serve the needs of wireless mesh access networks. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first HLF deployment made in a production wireless mesh network

    Exploiting the power of multiplicity: a holistic survey of network-layer multipath

    The Internet is inherently a multipath network: For an underlying network with only a single path, connecting various nodes would have been debilitatingly fragile. Unfortunately, traditional Internet technologies have been designed around the restrictive assumption of a single working path between a source and a destination. The lack of native multipath support constrains network performance even as the underlying network is richly connected and has redundant multiple paths. Computer networks can exploit the power of multiplicity, through which a diverse collection of paths is resource pooled as a single resource, to unlock the inherent redundancy of the Internet. This opens up a new vista of opportunities, promising increased throughput (through concurrent usage of multiple paths) and increased reliability and fault tolerance (through the use of multiple paths in backup/redundant arrangements). There are many emerging trends in networking that signify that the Internet's future will be multipath, including the use of multipath technology in data center computing; the ready availability of multiple heterogeneous radio interfaces in wireless (such as Wi-Fi and cellular) in wireless devices; ubiquity of mobile devices that are multihomed with heterogeneous access networks; and the development and standardization of multipath transport protocols such as multipath TCP. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of the literature on network-layer multipath solutions. We will present a detailed investigation of two important design issues, namely, the control plane problem of how to compute and select the routes and the data plane problem of how to split the flow on the computed paths. The main contribution of this paper is a systematic articulation of the main design issues in network-layer multipath routing along with a broad-ranging survey of the vast literature on network-layer multipathing. We also highlight open issues and identify directions for future work

    Blockchain for economically sustainable wireless mesh networks

Mesh networking allows wider low-cost Internet access with infrastructures built from routers contributed by diverse owners, whereas blockchain enables transparency and accountability for investments, revenue, or other forms of economic compensations from sharing of network traffic, content, and services. Crowdsourcing network coverage, combined with crowdfunding costs, can create economically sustainable yet decentralized Internet access. This means that every participant can invest in resources and pay or be paid for usage to recover the costs of network devices and maintenance. While mesh networks and mesh routing protocols enable self-organized networks that expand organically, cryptocurrencies and smart contracts enable the economic coordination among network providers and consumers. We explore and evaluate two existing blockchain software stacks, Hyperledger Fabric (HLF) and Ethereum geth with Proof of Authority (PoA) intended as a local lightweight distributed ledger, deployed in a real city-wide production mesh network and in laboratory network.
